A hidden gem of post-war educational design
Posted 25th July 2025
Hidden within the entrance of our academy, lies an exceptional piece of post-war artistic and architectural heritage: a mural by renowned artist Joseph Mayo, designed by Kenneth Clark MBE in partnership with Malkin Tiles Ltd.
Originally commissioned for Rhodesway School, the mural sits within a Grade II listed building, constructed between 1957 and 1959. The school is an unusually serious and forward thinking example of mid-20th-century educational architecture, reflected in its careful material choices. In response to the heavily polluted atmosphere of the time, the building features black painted steel, grey bricks, and durable tilework, combining practicality with a striking visual aesthetic.
Access to the mural is limited and viewing is by appointment only, but for those with an interest in design, architecture, or educational history, it offers a rare and valuable insight into the ethos and expression of Britain’s post-war school-building era.
